More and more American makeup artists are learning how to apply HD makeup in preparation for February, when U.S. broadcasters are to switch from analog to digital transmission. Around the world, many countries have changed or are in the process of changing to digital TV. While not all digital broadcasts are in high definition, even standard-definition programming looks sharper when it is sentdigitally.
The better the image, the thinking goes, the more exquisite skin needs tolook.
Cosmetic companies are reporting an increase in the number of makeup artists seeking to learn how to apply HD cosmetics by airbrush, a technique that gained popularity decades ago when the Hollywood studio MGM used it to paint extras as darker-skinned Romans for 'Ben-Hur.'
'The airbrush applies the makeup to the surface in a dot pattern and replicates the pixels that HD uses,' said Samantha Mandor, a spokeswoman for Temptu, a cosmetics company. 'With traditional makeup, you can see brushstrokes.'
Temptu used HD makeup during New York Fashion Week to apply vibrant hues of purple and yellow to models eyes for an evening wear fashion show by the designer JoannaMastroianni.
Before the show, artists poured the silicon-based liquid makeup into little spray guns and then airbrushed it onto the models in a fine, colorless mist. It smelled a bit like paint when first applied, but the result was an odorless, light foundation as the silicone in the makeup absorbed the skin s naturaloil.
Not everyone believes HD makeup is for everydayuse.
